Blumenherst advances in US Amateur
Amanda Blumenherst was already down three holes Wednesday when she cleared the green on the fifth hole and found a bunker. The reigning three-time NCAA Division I player of the year turned to her caddie, uncle Bill Blumenherst, for help. "I looked at him and said, 'What's happening?"' Blumenherst said.
 
New groove rule should benefit top players (PA SportsTicker)

Good feelings for Europeans at Oakland Hills
When the Ryder Cup was held at Oakland Hills in 2004, the Europeans left with an 18 1/2 -9 1/2 victory, the second of their three straight over the United States. The top points producers on that team are back for the PGA Championship that starts Thursday on the same course. Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood both had 4 1/2 of a possible five points over those three days.
 
Monster par 3s will be pivotal in PGA Championship
Paul Azinger stepped to the tee at Oakland Hills' par-3 ninth and his caddie told him how far it was to the front of the green. As he tapped the 3-wood in the bag, he said: "247." Azinger laughed, grabbed the recommended club and hit a spectacular tee shot onto the green that wound up very close to the pin.
 
Ryder Cup qualifying ends, auditions to follow
Paul Azinger loves the way his Ryder Cup team is shaping up going into the PGA Championship, the final tournament to earn one of the eight automatic spots on the U.S. squad. By putting so much emphasis on the majors, though, there could be a surprise addition from Oakland Hills -- even a club pro. The PGA of America announced a purse Wednesday of $7.5 million, with $1.35 million going to the winner.
