| American League home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken wrist, and the Chicago White Sox left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Quentin was removed from the lineup before Tuesday's game because of what the White Sox described then as a sore right forearm, and he hasn't played since. |

| LPGA backs off English-only requirement |
Under increasing criticism, the LPGA Tour on Friday backed off plans to suspend players who cannot speak English well enough tobe understood at pro-ams, in interviews or in making acceptance speeches at tournaments. | Jankovic reaches first Grand Slam final |
Jelena Jankovic is finally a Grand Slam finalist. Overcoming a slow start, Jankovic used fantastic defense and steady groundstrokes to beat Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4 Friday in the U.S. Open semifinals. | Marion Jones released from prison |
| Disgraced sprinter Marion Jones was released Friday from federal prison after completing most of her six-month sentence for lying about her steroid use. Jones left a halfway house in San Antonio around 8 a.m., said LaTanya Robinson, a community corrections manager for the federal Bureau of Prisons. Jones, who has a house in Austin, will remain on probation. |

| More than two out of three people worldwide tuned in for the Beijing Olympics. Nielsen Media Research says 4.7 billion viewers globally saw at least some of the 17 days of TV coverage last month. | Rangers All-Star Kinsler out for season |
| Texas Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia. Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. Kinsler was hopeful of avoiding surgery and possibly playing again this season, but he remains sore and the Rangers said Friday he will have surgery next week. |

| Bolt pulls past Powell to win windy 100m |
| Usain Bolt rallied against cold, wind and Asafa Powell to win the 100 meters in 9.77 seconds Friday at the Van Damme Memorial. Running against a strong headwind in his season finale, the three-time Olympic champion had a bad start and watched Powell go ahead. But Bolt pulled even with Powell and used his long strides to finish 0.08 off the world record he set at the Beijing Games. |

| Cowboys CB Newman questionable |
| Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman is listed as questionable for the season opener at Cleveland. Newman's uncertain status on Friday's injury report was another sign that Adam Jones may make his Dallas debut as a starter on Sunday. It will be Jones' first NFL game since the 2006 season. | Seahawks WR Branch to miss opener |
| The return of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch is going to wait at least a week. Coach Mike Holmgren says Branch will not play Sunday when the Seahawks open their season at Buffalo. Branch was trying to get back in time for the season opener just seven months after having major reconstructive surgery on his left knee. |
