St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Perez, right, is congratulated by Troy Glaus after picking up his first career save in the Cardinals' 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a baseball game Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, in St. Louis. Ryan Ludwick said he simply followed Albert Pujols' lead. Ludwick tied a franchise record with a homer in his fifth straight game, only four pitches after Pujols' grand slam, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-6 on Wednesday. "The best part about it is we're winning," Ludwick said.

Carlos Pena admits there is a growing sense thatTampa Bay might be destined for big things this season. That said, the Rays are trying to stay calm about their success. Pena's three-run homer capped a six-run rally in the ninth inning that carried the Rays past the Cleveland Indians 10-7 Wednesday for one of their most thrilling victories in a wondrous season.

Bucs' Karstens near perfect in 2-hitter
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens waits for the baseball after a double hit by Arizona Diamondbacks' Chris Young, rear left, broke up his perfect game during the eighth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 in Phoenix. Jeff Karstens has given the Pittsburgh Pirates a perfect start. Almost a perfect game, too. The recently acquired right-hander set down his first 23 batters before Chris Young's two-out double in the eighth inning and finished with a two-hitter Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kendrick pitches Phillies by Marlins 5-0
Florida Marlins' Anibal Sanchez pauses after the Philadelphia Phillies' Ryan Howard hit a double to deep left feild in the fifth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, in Philadelphia. The Phillies won 5-0. Kyle Kendrick doesn't have overpowering stuff and he doesn't light up the radar gun. Somehow he keeps finding ways to win. Kendrick pitched six scoreless innings, Ryan Howard homered and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida Marlins 5-0 on Wednesday night. The NL East-leading Phillies moved 2 1/2 games up on Florida and three ahead of the New York Mets.

Chicago Cubs fans celebrate their 11-4 win over the Houston Astros after a baseball game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008. Now that Alfonso Soriano is back from the disabled list and feeling fine, the hits are coming at a healthy rate. Soriano launched a three-run homer after Mark DeRosa hit a grand slam during an eight-run burst in the third inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros 11-4 Wednesday. The Cubs won for the ninth time in 11 games, and improved the NL's best record to 69-46.

Wakefield dominates Royals, Red Sox win
Kansas City Royals' Ross Gload drives the ball into left for a two-run single in the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, in Kansas City, Mo. The Red Sox won 8-2. Tim Wakefield's knuckleball must be better than Trey Hillman's. The Kansas City manager tossed his version to Royals hitters in batting practice Wednesday afternoon, hoping to get them ready for the Boston knuckler who's second in Red Sox history with 1,778 strikeouts. It didn't work. Wakefield's floating, tantalizing signature pitch shut down the Royals on four hits through six crisp innings.

Baek outpitches Pedro, Padres top Mets
San Diego Padres catcher Josh Bard, left, congratulates closer Trevor Hoffrmann who earned a save in the Padres' 4-2 victory over the New York Mets in a baseball game at Shea Stadium in New York, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008. For one night at least, Padres manager Bud Black saw a lot of the traits that made his team successful last year and one major thing he didn't see much of in 2007 -- power. Jody Gerut hit Pedro Martinez's opening pitch for the first of San Diego's three homers and Mets third baseman David Wright committed a costly error, helping the Padres beat New York 4-2 on Wednesday night.
