Stabbed Sooner Willis out of hospital
An Oklahoma basketball player stabbed at a Norman nightclub has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Sooners coach Jeff Capel said Thursday. Freshman guard Ray Willis was released from hospital care on Wednesday. "He sustained multiple wounds, one of which resulted in a partially collapsed lung," Capel said.
 
Morris twins cleared to join Jayhawks
Twin freshmen Markieff and Marcus Morris have been cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center to enroll in classes at Kansas and join the defending NCAA champion Jayhawks. Classes at Kansas began Aug. 21. With the certification of their academic eligibility, the two 18-year-old recruits from Philadelphia were preparing to enroll and begin classes Friday.
 
Winthrop C Buechert out for season
Winthrop center Andy Buechert is out for the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Eagles coach Randy Peele said Friday the 6-foot-9 player from Germany will have surgery next week. He was injured while playing a pickup game last month. Buechert started two of the 32 games he played in last season.
 
All Horizon teams to play BracketBusters
It's a slam dunk for the Horizon League. The conference announced all 10 of its members will play in the annual ESPNU BracketBusters on Feb. 20-21. Pairings will be set Feb. 2. Loyola of Chicago, Valparaiso, Wright State, Youngstown State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Illinois-Chicago will host games, while Butler, Cleveland State, Detroit and Wisconsin-Green Bay will play on the road.
 
Mizzou's Lawrence headed to Seton Hall
Former Newark high school basketball standout Keon Lawrence has transferred from Missouri to play at Seton Hall. Lawrence can practice with the Pirates this season, but cannot play in games until the 2009-10 season. "Keon is an incredible recruit for us," coach Bobby Gonzalez said Tuesday. "He has a huge name in the state of New Jersey and he's coming back home to Newark.
 
Krzyzewski settling back in at Duke
Mike Krzyzewski always maintained that leading the U.S. Olympic basketball team would make him a changed coach. Sure enough, Coach K was there on the sideline in Beijing and he stopped himself from saying something he otherwise might have. "Most of the time I was there," Krzyzewski said, "I was mic'ed." Gustav cancels St. John's Cancun trip
The unpredictable path of Gustav, the storm that has killed dozens, forced St. John's officials to cancel the basketball team's Labor Day weekend trip to Cancun, Mexico. The school said Thursday the five-day trip that would have featured two games against international teams will not be rescheduled, but the program will consider options for international travel before the 2009-10 season.
