Make Your Own Butter
« on: March 29, 2008, 11:29:46 pm »
I won't touch Margarine; I won't touch creepy oil spreads.  I certainly won't touch canola.

But butter is expensive, and I try to use it as sparingly as possible.  Well, I was tooling around on the Internet the last couple weeks, and it said you can make butter by simply putting heavy cream in an airtight container and shaking the daylights out of it for about ever.

After about five minutes of shaking, it becomes whipped cream, although Willy Wonka says it's not whipped cream unless it's been whipped with whips.  That looked delectable enough, but I continued on.  After about thirty five minutes, with a few short interruptions, the butterfat largely separated from the watery liquids, and settled to the bottom.

I then pour the liquid down the drain, and then did my best to separate the watery liquid with a broad knife, as it hastens spoilage.  What I was left with a creamy, unmistakably buttery substance.  I put most of it into cheesecloth, got the rest of it onto a plate, and refrigerated it.

It was not as smooth as I would have like, and separated easier than I thought it would, but it was creamy and rich.  A cup of cream gives you perhaps a stick of butter.  I hope to try it on popcorn, and add salt to the concoction next time to make it a little more flavorful.

Anyone try anything like this before?

If you're gonna go through all of that trouble, add some garlic, cayenne, basil (or other fresh herbs) and turn this baby into a nice little compound butter...  It would surely go great on the :popcorn

it should be noted that you will not burn the calories in the butter concoction by shaking the shit out of the cream.

I can get bars of butter for $3.00 salted or unsalted.  How much is butter going for in America? :popcorn

I only have a pint to play with, which isn't enough to churn.

Also, since it's my first time, I didn't think it necessary to invest in equipment when the experience of shaking the container would suffice just as quickly.

Also, butter churning in my apartment is awkward.

Saxy, God Bless you mang, But you're one of the weirdest doods ever!

How much did you save by buying cream over buying some nice salted butter?

a carton of cream costs like $3 up here, You can get a lb of butter for maybe $4. Big Savings :uhh

And really how bad is Canola Oil?

It's about experience, not savings.  Sure you could pony-up an extra buck and have ready made butter, but how many non-Amish people these days can say that they made butter?

i don't know how serious whitby is in his words, but that pretty much sums it up for me.

I like to feel like I am capable of doing things I've never done before.  And cooking food out of ingredients I literally made myself gives me a sens of accomplishment I don't usually get.  It makes the usual subhuman drear that I experience into something a little more special.
