Springdale [Arkansas] Voters Approve Bond for Baseball Field

Springdale (AP) - Voters at Springdale have approved bond issues to build a minor-league baseball stadium and improve the city's streets -- and a sales tax extension to pay the bonds off.

The baseball-stadium proposal was approved in today's special election by only a 17-vote margin. The city hopes to entice the AA Texas League team now playing at Wichita, Kansas, the Wichita Wranglers, to move its operations to Northwest Arkansas. At Wichita, City Council members have vowed to renovate a 75-year-old stadium where the Wranglers play, in an effort to keep the team.

Springdale voters faced three questions in the special election, and all three had to be approved to allow plans to build the baseball field and to improve city streets to be carried out. All three gained a majority of favorable votes Tuesday.

Of course, the Arkansas Travelers have always been in Little Rock. Imaging having TWO Texas League teams in one state. That'll be one hell of a rivalry.
