The first debate topic for this semester is very interesting...

Resolved: A just society ought to presume consent for organ procurement from the deceased.

Several times in the past the discussion in these therads was helpful for case or contention ideas.  I'm hoping that can happen again.

The topic makes no mention of individuals who have legal advanced directives versus those who do not.  As such, I have a feeling that the biggest argument in the round for the negative will be to try and force the aff to argue that the government ought to go against the wishes of an individual.  Aff, of course, is going to have to argue that the question only pertains to people with no known advanced directives.  Outside of that distinction, what are your thoughts?

Personally, I agree with this. What need does a corpse have of the pieces of it that are just going to rot or burn like the rest? It is a good and noble thing to donate your organs so many people can continue to live.  Truly, it is really the only way besides parenthood a person can leave a legacy in the world.

However, morally I cannot abide with compulsory harvesting. I interned at LifeNet as a young medic, and I seriously thought about accepting a position with them rather than go into the field I currently am in.  I had to routinely take hacksaws and sawzalls to dead people. There is a sort of violation that goes with organ harvesting and it should be up to the person to choose whether they want to do it or not. That being said, the reason there aren't more donations now is because most people aren't really forced to choose if they want to do so. Therefore I think each person should be obligated to check yes or no when they renew their licenses.

TL:DR - I don't agree with compulsory organ harvesting, but I do think that a person should have to choose one way or another each time they renew their license.

What would your response be to someone who voiced concern that if they choose organ donation, that the paramedics and/or doctors might not try as hard to save them?

Assume your boss is listening to the explanation.  TIA.   :koolaid

what would a paramedic/doctor gain from letting a "donor" die? That makes 0 sense

Its a pretty common concern.  If Dr *uigs knows he has a patient who needs a liver, why would he make as much effort to make sure I live if he knows he can take mine if I die.

thats absurd, you have to match and type blood type and coagulant factors beforehand.

It would make more sense that a blood bank sent out hitman to find good matches and have them murdered. :lol

We have protocols to follow when we show up on a scene.  These are set by the medical director of the EMS department, who is a chief doctor at a local hospital. The fact that the patient is a donor has no effect on what we do, as we are set by standing orders for every patient.  Deviation from these orders will have us lose our job, possibly be arrested,  and definitely be sued in civil court with no protection from the agency,  as I broke the protocols.

We can only work to preserve the organs when we come upon an obvious death from a trauma that can't be worked,  such as a decap, terrible car accident, etc.

No, but apparently YOU are.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/16/the-reluctant-organ-donor/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

50 percent of respondents are concerned that doctors will not try as hard to save them if they are known to be an organ donor.

That's not even close to true. We don't give a shit about what the doctor does when we drop them off. Our job is done and we have another call to go to.

A NY times blog.

You'd be dealing with more factual information if you went ahead and just pulled it straight out of your butthole.

I know this will sound repugnant and you won't be able to believe it...

Money. Lots of money in black market organs.
Human life is cheap in most of the world. But if you're rich, you can pay for life-extention surgeries and fresh new organs ..

Many of those "Missing Children" on the side of milk cartons go into Human Traficking (sex/slave industry) or vital organ industry.. Thats why they are almost never recovered.
