New Commish wants to eliminate defensive shifts
« on: January 26, 2015, 02:32:33 pm »
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/new-commissioner-rob-manfred-open-to-banning-defensive-shifts-172529801.html

Quote
New baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has been in office a little more than 12 hours and he's already making some interesting waves. In an interview that aired on ESPN on Sunday morning, Manfred made it clear that examining the pace of the game is first on his list of priorities, but not far behind will be finding ways to "inject additional offense into the game."

Without being prompted for an example, Manfred specifically mentioned he'd be open to pursuing the elimination of defensive shifts, which he says give the defensive team a competitive advantage.

Really??  That gives them a competitive advantage?

Ol' Billy Wagner gets it.

Throw a few bunts down the third base line and see how many times they shift on you.

The fatass DHing in the AL might find this difficult though.

How about this new rule pitch is not allowed to throw over 80 MPH to "inject additional offense into the game."

If you can't hit to the opposite field on demand, you don't deserve to play in the big leagues. This is something that has been lost from 1975-80 when big ball play became the norm. Need to go back to pure hitting, teaching fundamentals, actual hitting vs. power.

Ichiro and Wade Boggs made a Hall of Fame career simply by hitting to the opposite field whenever they wanted to. Situational hitting doesn't even exist anymore.

Not in favor of this, especially as a Pirates fan. Clint Hurdle employs all sorts of shifts.

what I like is the more offense rules seems to directly conflict with the shorter game time idea.
