Sonnen hints that Jim Rome will be Joe Rogan’s new partner at UFC events

There have been rumblings that Mike Goldberg could be on the way out now that the UFC is now under new ownership. There were even whispers that Joe Rogan could be leaving too as he has already scaled back his duties and no longer travels to shows outside of the United States.

Earlier this week Dana White told the Fight Network that Rogan wasn’t going anywhere but didn’t say anything about the future of his longtime partner cageside, Mike Goldberg leading many to wonder if he would be leaving in 2017.

Today former UFC #1 contender Chael Sonnen asked his co-host if Jim Rome had been announced as Goldberg’s replacement in the booth. After his co-host mentioned didn’t know anything about it Sonnen quickly backpedaled and went in another direction and changed the subject.

Jim Rome is a pretty big name in sportstalk. Whether you love him or hate him you know who he is. He has been very gracious to the UFC and often has Dana White or other top fighters on his show to plug the upcoming fights. Ironically enough Rome just listed his home in Irvine, California and has put it up for sale. I’m not sure if that should be read into but if he relocates to Las Vegas to work for the UFC that might be smart given the crash course he would have to take in MMA.

Nothing is official and Sonnen didn’t know for sure himself if Rome was going to the UFC. But where there’s smoke, there is usually fire. And “The Bad Guy” knows people in MMA who know things.

That would be sick, but im not sure if it would be a good fit for Rome.  I hope it works out. Goldberg sucks, so anything would be an upgrade from him

When Ariel Helwani starts to talk about this, I'll believe it. Rome's not going anywhere. Why did he just spend 2 days this week with the O'Reilly's people? Besides, like the article says he doesn't have the background to do this and he's no fool. Rome won't put himself in a position that could be detrimental to his brand. HOF radio host...not a play by play guy IMO.

True...

So let's say he takes the position...if it's even offered up. Would he only do Fight Pass exclusive cards and PPV's since the others are on Fox...of course a new TV deal is in the works for 2018 so maybe CBS is actually in the mix?

These things are 3-5 day events, not just Saturday nights. Would UFC just allow him to pop in for the fights then fly back to LA on Sun morning? But he could do the radio show from any affiliate station in the U.S. or Canada for that matter though, right? This just means more work for his home crew who would inevitably want more money. CBS says screw you...replaces them with lesser-thans...the Jungle brand declines.

Like I said, Rome is great for radio, however, when he's on tv his delivery seems forced and overly rehearsed. Long pauses don't fly during a fight broadcast and I doubt Rogan would be down with slipping Van Smack take ideas during the call.
