On this date in 1934, Jay "Dizzy" Dean and his younger brother,Paul "Daffy" Dean of the Cardinals shut out the Brooklyn Dodgers,13-0 and 3-0 in a doubleheader. Even more amazing than the brother double blanking is that after "Dizzy" pitched 71/3 innings of no-hit ball in the first game,"Daffy" no-hit the Dodgers in the second. Imagine the odds on siblings shutting out a team in both ends of a doubleheader, let alone both pitching a no-hitter in each game, which Dizzy (unknowingly, since of course he couldn't predict his brother's gem) came within five outs of achieving. And these blankings were during the '34 National League pennant race, which the Birds won, then defeated the Tigers in the World Series. Need I mention that this feat is (and will be given modern baseball's bullpen reliance) unprecedented ?
